I can remember as a young boy watching the original series in reruns late at night at my Grandmother's house and I became hooked on Sci-fi because of it. When the rebirth of the TV franchise came with TNG, there was still a strong following with the movies of the original cast. Everything was just set right with those raised on the original series being nostalgic, popular movies, no real competition as far as sci-fi series on at the time; all those things contributed to the rebirth of Star Trek.

At this point, I don't think the conditions are very right for a resurge in popularity like it was then. too many other sci-fi shows (sci-fi network) and the bad ratings that Enterprise got along with the results of the last couple of movies. I don't think that there are fans that were raised on TNG that long to go back as much as there was on the original series. I think it will be awhile before there is a strong Star Trek following. I may be strange, but I have never seen an episode or a movie that I didn't like. I mean some are better than others, but I have liked it all from Original, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and all the movies. But I think Star Trek is very weak with following at this point. If Roddenberry was still alive, I think there could be a renewed interest the way Lucas came back and renewed the popularity of Star Wars.

All in all, I hope this new movie does well and gives a new generation the hope to live long and prosper.

Certainly not in the foreseeable future. And no, the legacy does not depend on them making more series and movies. Look at the huge fan base for the original series that goes to conventions, buys Star trek merchandise, etc despite the fact that the series ended decades ago.

As long as there are people alive who have adored any one of the series, the legacy continues. That is the thing about the legacy - it lives in the hearts and minds of the fans, not in any single producer, show or actor.

And since I don't see syndication anytime soon, it will live on.

No, I don't think it ever will. It will live on in the hearts of the fans and will be handed down through generations. Besides, after 40 years you would have thought people should have found something else to follow, yet its still here and the fan base is still strong. Every year there are bound to be people who will be fascinated with the star trek universe.

No, I don't think it ever will. It is pretty weak right now, but in 20 years they will probably decide to redo the whole thing and it will be booming. Probably the hardest thing is pleasing all the negative fans out there. Star Trek fans, to me are some of the hardest to please. I personally think they killed the series themselves this time around with Enterprise. Instead of sitting back and acknowledging some flaws they had to write in and HAMMER it into everyone's head. Geeks!

Possible. With Berman having ran the franchise into the ground and Bakula having been cast as the first non-Shakespearean capt. and crappy actor, it look slike if this new film, Star Trek XI bombs, we may have to acknowledge Star Wars as the winner.

Ever? Well, it will EVENTUALLY, but...
Not while they're playing the shows on tv. This is the first time ALL the shows have been on at the same time, even if on different channels. On the other hand, the movie could either sink or energize the franchise, depending on how good it is and how well it does. I've got my fingers crossed.

No, simply due to the fact that if it does, it will be resurrected in the future for everyone to make fun of it. "This is what they thought? Ha!" It might even be so funny that it'll get another cult following.
