The sex of your child is determined by the combination of X and Y chromosomes. If your baby has 2 X chromosomes, it will be a girl, and if the baby has XY, it will be a boy. You have XX, your husband has XY, and depending on which sperm cell gets to your egg first, it will be a boy or a girl.
However, the differentiation is hormonal. A baby will by default start developping female sexual organs, but a few months into the process (before anything starts becoming visible), hormones from the Y chromosome will destroy part of those, and devellop other parts. If the hormones don't kick in, male parts will be destroyed and female parts will develop "by default".
I obviously didn't explain this in great detail, if the subject interests you, research it on wikipedia :)

What this person probably meant is that at first a fetus has no visible penis, even if it's a boy. They both look the same in the beginning, but it doesn't have a vagina either, and by no means is it genetically female. There is just a little nub that either shrinks in and becomes the female clit or expands and becomes the male penis, depending on what hormones the fetus's genetic structure cause it to make. Around 16-20 weeks sex organs can be seen on an ultrasound, either showing a penis or three parallel lines indicating a vulva.
A person's gender is determined at conception, depending on which sperm reaches the egg, an "x" or a "y". X is female and y is male. All eggs have an x, so xy is a boy and xx is a girl, and the genetic makeup is determined by the man (so never get mad at your wife for not having you any sons...it was your cells that determined that).

no. The sex of the baby is determind when the sperm fertilizes the egg. Maybe they are confused because the parts of the baby can really be seen on an ultrasound until about 16 weeks at the earliest. and i read on www.babycenter.com that until around 16 weeks they pretty much look the same.

Yes we all start out as one sex. I per fer to call it asexual, but some people use the term girl. What happens is that the baby start to develop and then the sex is determined. If it is going to a boy a penis grows, if it is going to be a girl a clitoris grows. This is why men have nipples. Because the nipples are formed before sex is determined.
