Necessity: a need. Invention: a solution. A successful invention must have a use, it must be needed. Most great inventions were the solution to a problem. Therefore, necessity gives birth to new ideas and inventions.

Inventions are nurtured and "born" because someone saw a need for doing things a different way. The statement could also apply to improvements to methods or processes. For example, years ago I had a job which required me to distribute copies of documents to many different offices. Although the distribution was similar for each document, there were variations depending on what the document covered. I was taught to take one document and make the distribution into bins and then take the second document, etc. Since I was new on the job, I knew I would never get my work done unless I figured out a way to speed up the process. Therefore, I just laid out all of the documents of one type that would have identical distribution and then just gathered the copies of each document for a particular office all at once. I NEEDED to speed up the process so that need or necessity allowed me to give "birth" to the invention or new process.

It means that the invention of something is brought about due to the need, or necessity for it. Example - Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone because there was a need for instant, long distance communication.
