The "Bing Bang Theory" was the rumour that all the young starlets in Hollywood were attempting to further their careers by achieving "Grand Unification" with Bing Crosby.

Bob Hope found out all about it by some pretty forceful questioning of his friend Bing. He then provided the information he learned to gossip columnists "on background." as they say in government and journalistic circles. That's why, when columnists wrote about it, they all attributed what they had learned to the "Third Degree Comic Background."
