a great deal provided that corruption is kept to a minimum.
nike, dodge/mercedes, intel and dozens of others have built or are building plants in Vietnam. the plants currently offer "middle class" wages with the opportunity for advancement. with decent wages, more families can afford a college education for their children. with better education, the next generation can advance further up the economic ladder.
in addition to the common people benefitting from MNC's, the government is reaping 100's of millions in taxes. there still is no income tax for individual vietnamese citizens (although that may change soon ). and the government has recently passed a law requiring a viet national to be on the board of all foreign companies doing business there.
on the whole, considering vietnam's centuries old struggle for self-determination, i would say that MNC's will be more of a benefit than a detriment.
