the inscription on the ring is, as other have said one ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. sauron had the ring to try to bring all the free people of middle earth under his rule. the ring symbolizes people's own ulteriro motives, and their deep desires.

One ring to rule them all
one ring to bind them
one ring to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them
the craving for the ring was one of the best bits of the start of the book

In the Black speech of Mordor
Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.
translated- One ring to rule them all,one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
