Because atheists assert a position that many people find very uncomfortable: There are no deities, no afterlife, and the people who have based their lives around these ideas have been wasting their time. Furthermore, you are going to die and cease to be, along with everyone you love. There is no eternal paradise awaiting you; you're just going to be dead in about another 60 or 70 years. Or sooner. All the loved ones who have died are gone forever. They're not in a better place, they're just dead.
It's pretty harsh. But reality is harsh.
It's easy to avoid having to believe this.
It's much more comforting to believe, as Christians (1/3 of Earth's population) and Muslims (1/5) believe, that when you die you're going to be taken to an eternal paradise, along with all the other good souls. The bad people will get their just deserts. This is a very reassuring way of seeing things. Most people worldwide have some kind of religion. Since everybody else is doing it, why not join the bandwagon? There's loads of emotional and social incentives for belief. Atheists are a tiny minority worldwide, and it's very easy to discriminate against a minority with views so antithetical to your own. So many people dislike atheists.

Seriously, it is threatening to those who are faithful to God. It can upset some people. One of my best friends professed his disbelief in God for many years. But on his death bed, he became a Christian. He was otherwise a genius, and read every book he could get his hands on. But, he had "issues". May he rest in peace now.

Maybe because of the arrogance of atheist and the self-defeating nature of it. Think in terms of end game, the only way you could know if you were right about an after life is to be wrong.
Further they claim to be open minded, when they are as close minded as those who refuse to believe science

Well even the devil knows and believes there is God so for a human to say there aint no God thats just wicked. As for hating I dont hate atheists but I dont like them either

the 'dislike' originates from the atheists' denial of true love. How can love be given to that who doesn't love?

Because people (I'm talking about christians) are obtrusive, and they can't accept that some has a different opinion. They always impose their religion on others.

I don't dislike them it's just pretty sad that they have such STRONG beliefs ..they actually BELIEVE that there is no God .. amazing to me that they are such strong BELIEVERS .. I can see somebody questioning if there is a God or not and having an open mind one way or another, but actually BELIEVING that there is no God, which is what atheists believe is just plain DUMB .. are they so smart that they can KNOW without any doubt that "there is no God" ...??

To deny God is tantamount to murdering Him|
To murder God is to murder the absolute *goodness,* *truth,* and *beauty* - and such people do so because *they* wish to be God themselves, attributing all excellence to *themselves alone* and to no one else|
That might help to explain why so many people despise atheists|
