Does anyone know why my monitor sometimes works, then sometimes it doesn't? Sometimes I get the message "No signal Input or cable Disconnected". Other times it works just fine. It just periodically gets this error (as if it needs a coffee break). Sometimes it comes back within minutes, other times it could be hours. But it does come back? I have a Compaq Presario 5UVME2 Desktop running WindowsXP SP2. I don't even go near the computer. It just comes back on by iteself. Since it was temporarily up, I installed the latest ROMpaq and Firmware. That didn't make any difference though. Its down again. Its very temperamental. I've tried a different monitor, different graphics card, and several diferent sticks of PC100 Ram, different power cord, cleaned out the dust, etc. How would I test the mobo to see if that's the problem?

imaginary number - I've used 3 different monitors...same results....also, I can't run a program if I can't see anything.

albatross - I don't have another slot.

smokingun - I'm using the same graphics card I bought with the computer and its worked fine for 5 years. Then this started happening.

ibtrigger... - can't be the monitor because I connect the same monitor to my laptop and it works fine.

karl - I'll have to see if I can locate one.

You seem to have covered most of the bases, I would try swapping out the power supply if you have a spare one handy. you dont even need to remove the old one, just bench test it with all the proper cabling and power connectors to drives. If you dont have a spare power supply, maybe a repair shop will loan you a used one to try out. I do this regularly for my clients who know a bit about repairing their own machines.

is the monitor ok with other pc.s

download a copy of a linux live cd such as auditor.

this will run from cd and not make any changes to the pc- if all is fine then the problem is not hardware but os/driver

also if the mobo has onboard graphics then use that rather than the graphics card

also disconnect any other pci cards incase the psu is unwell

Your monitor may be overheating. If it's an older monitor it may be that a power transformer is getting ready to depart. Do u have another you could try? Or borrow one. Good luck

Have you tried changing just the cable? Or maybe try using a PCI graphics card instead of AGP or PCIe

Try to change your graphic card to another slot. Maybe the slot that you're using is having some problems.
