I'm not sure about "loptop" but for laptops you should go with Dell.

If those are your only choices, then you defiantly should go with the dell. Most software on the (desktop) market is written for windows operating system, and although macs are able to run windows XP naively, there is currently no guarantee (at least of I have heard) that they will run windows vista or the new operating system announced my MS (I heard it was coming out in 09). Whatever you go with, get the service warranty, most parts in a laptop require expensive part replacement, and arg labor as well.

Keep in mind that was just for reliability, personally I think macs are better systems overall. I have never owned a mac capable of operating OSX, but I am a programming major, and support the open source community. OSX is built upon a distribution of unix (BSD), a more secure operating system that has a very interesting graphical interface. Macs are currently able to run windows XP, but alas they do seem to cost more. I am writing this post from the cheapest laptop from dell at the time I bought it (which cost about 700 with tax + shipping), where as the apple with the same 3 year warranty (cheapest model) would have cost me 1300.

So if all you want is reliability and compatibility, go with the dell. However if you want a better system overall, I would go with the mac.

GO with the Dell. They have excellent machines, and really, the reliability is up to you. Get a good anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall application and run them. Do that and your machine will run a long time.

I have 2 Dell laptops and one is 5 years old. It is my primary communication tool, internet computer, and works very well.

Dell also has some great deals. A 20% off $999 laptop at http://24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html can help you keep those costs down.

Good Luck.

if your looking for the most reliable then Apple is the way to go!!!!

if you just want a cheap computer then Dell. If you want a good windows computer then Sony is they way to go!!!

as for software Apple has some good stuff and Windows Vista is pretty much copying Apple.

so all in all if you can afford and Apple MacBook Pro go for it

obviously price range is is pretty flexible with apple on the high end...not knowing what your going to be mainly doing with it has a lot to do with what you r going to pay...my opinion and only mine,i wouldnt own another dell if you gave me a brand new one and i think apple is overpriced for what it is...toshiba satellite with duo-core is the deal all the way around, but if you want warp speed and the best of everything, alienware has a new laptop that probably could launch satelites and the space shuttle at the same time...UNREAL!!price...$4,995..plus tax...a deal if you want a liquid cooled system,300gb hard drive with a duo-core processor that is OVERCLOCKED to...2.688ghz and dual video cards all the bells and trumpets...19"monitor also but the thing only weighs 6.8lbs,i think...to the moon and beyond!!

I just happened to have one of each and they are both excellent. Now, if you like to play, you will find more games for the Dell. The Mac is more "professional" oriented.
