It never changed. The British called it Bombay because that's what the name sounded like to them, but Mumbai is closer to the original pronunciation in the native language. Kind of like Beijing is closer to the proper pronunciation than Peking.

But Istanbul really was Constantinople at one time.

The name of Bombay changed to Mumbai in the year 1996
It was officially changed by the Shiv Sena in 1998

Mumbai was the original & correct name, & it was correctly restored in 1995.
