How can an 8 year old girl give her father a valentine card?... sounds a bit "sus" if you ask me.
I know there is a tradition of (ahem) close family ties in the southern states but surely this goes beyond the bounds of good taste?

Sorry , I should have added that I NEVER award "best answer" to anyone who references "WIKIPEDIA" in their answer.

Wikipedia is amateurish and simplistic. It aslo presents an "americanised" view of the world... and we all know where THAT gets us.

Okay no.....good taste?...what? loving someone and expressing that through a simple card is going outside the boundaries of good taste?
"_The day has come to be associated with a generic platonic greeting of "Happy Valentine's Day."_"

"_Valentine's Day was probably imported into North America in the 19th century by British settlers. In the United States, the first mass-produced valentines of embossed paper lace were produced and sold shortly after 1847 by Esther Howland (1828-1904) of Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father operated a large book and stationery store, and she took her inspiration from an English valentine she had received. Since 2001, the Greeting Card Association has been giving an annual "Esther Howland Award for a Greeting Card Visionary."
In the second half of the 20th century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manners of gifts in the United States, usually from a man to a woman. Such gifts typically include roses and chocolates. In the 1980s, the diamond industry began to promote Valentine's Day as an occasion for giving jewelry.
In some North American elementary schools, students are asked to give a Valentine card or small gift to everyone in the class. The greeting cards of these students often mention what they appreciate about each other.
Some people see Valentine's Day as an opportunity to give to charities and help others._"

I didn't give my parents Valentine Cards but when I was a child, there was always a beautiful heart shaped box of chocolates for my sis and me, as well as a much bigger box for mom.

And unfortunately, ahem, incest is not limited to the south. Fortunately, it has nothing to do with love and sweetness, like Valentines Day does.

A common tradition is for American schoolkids to give Valentine Cards out in school. Long about 5th grade (back in the early 70s) my teachers made it mandatory that you made a card for every kid in your class so no one would get their feelings hurt.

Because although Valentine's Day may have started as a "lover's day," it now has become a "loved one's day." You can give valentine cards to anybody, not all of them say lovey dovey things. And this "tradition" you talk about of close family ties in souther states is a stereotype. While, yes, there are incest people in the south, they are other places to. I live in Georgia and my family is not like that and nobody I know is like that. It does exist, yes, and maybe more often in the south than other places, but not everyone is like that.

I'm in the Uk and I bought a Valentine card for my wee grandson who is 1. because the verse was perfect[he does make my life perfect] and let ANYONE tell me there is anything suspect about that and they will be told where to keep their filthy mind.

They must have more money than sense. The whole idea of Valentines day has been distorted for commercial reasons.I should think the content of the cards is appropriate to the person they are being sent to.----well you would hope so!!

i give my family valentines cards. its a fake holiday celebrating how much you love everyone in your life. I always get my folks a box of their favorite kind of chocolates--- my dad gets sugar free because of his diabetes, and my mom gets dark chocolate... there is nothing wrong with that. a box of valentines cost around $3 at the grocery... those are to be passed out to class mates. usually, there is one or two bigger cards in the box ment for a teacher.
