I operated a coin laundry and saw everything that goes wrong with both type detergents. Overloading the washer is the main cause of clumping and detergent residue left on clothes.(plenty of water needed for clothes to wash properly) Liquid detergent users have a tendency to use more than necessary for each load, which also results in detergent residue left in clothes.(more is not better). These symptoms usually occur in a top loading machine. You will obtain a much better wash and rinse if you use a front loading machine.
Remember.don't overload!

I think it depends on the brand and the user's preference. I've used powder for years, and found that with the cheaper brands, the powder didn't dissolve completely. Like an earlier answer stated, overfilling your washer will do this as well even with expensive brands, but some cheaper brands will do it no matter how many clothes go in.

With the liquid brands, I agree that sometimes I use too much, resulting in having to spend more $. Also, after using the brands that are perfume and dye free, the clothes seem to still have an odor.

Either way, I've found that putting the soap in before adding the clothes gives it enough time to dissolve and disperse in the water, helping out the situation. You could also argue which is better for the environment - a plastic bottle or a cardboard box?

Powder or Liquid doesnt really make a difference its the ingredients in them that causes harm to the environment. Most laundry detergents available will contain phosphates and other chemicals that harm the environment. As an alternative you can buy completely organic liquid and powder detergents that are completely organic and made from natural products - no phosphates & chemicals. Better for your clothes, better for you and better for the environment.

I like liquid a lot better. The powder gets clumpy and doesn't completely dissolve in the water.

Liquid dissolves better than powder so it wont leave visible residues on dark colors the way powder can.

Liquid is much better. You are less likely to get white marks on clothes from powder that has dried onto them. It's also better for the machine because it doesn't clog the dispenser, which in turn means less cleaning!

I prefer powder, there are more on the market and some with residual perfumes which help

make sure you put the powder into the tub whilst the water is filling then let it agitate a little before putting your clothes in
