It's been my personal experience that neither big nor small checked prints look good on a bulky body nor do most prints for that matter. Subtle/same color thin vertical piping or ruching in front will elongate your body-solid colors look better. Black or a dark blue can look good depending on the type of fabric and length: if a sweater, it shouldn't be a thick fabric and it should extend below your bottom to extend your waistline. If just a dark top, a V-neck or for a woman who is big on top, a square neckline. What would really slim down a bulky body is a structured double-breasted jacket that is solid in color, nips at the waist for definition and flairs from the waist and extends far enough to cover one's behind. If a woman's waisline is a concern that makes her look bulkier, try going for tops that have a flare at the bottom of the top-like a empire waisted top emphasizing the bust with an a-line flare at the bottom half of the top (kind of like baby-doll tops but don't look so much like "pregnant mom tops"). Tunic tops and ankle length dresses and pencil skirts make one look slimmer also. The main thing is structure. Hope this helps.

smaller checks will make you look slimmer, but vertical stripes make you look more slim.
