Well, I might as well throw in my 2-cents worth. No, we are not a Christian nation. Most of the "founding fathers" weren't Christian either - rather most were Deists. If this were a Christian nation, we would not have freedom of religion. Are many U.S. citizens Christian? Many say they are but that doesn't mean we are a country made up of Christians. There are many who would like it to be and some who believe it is - but that is the greatness of our country - the right to have your own opinion and express it.

Yes of course. At the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin requested that each morning prayer be offered for help from Heaven above.
The most often quoted authority at the convention was the Bible. The most often quoted book of the Bible was the Book of Deuteronomy, a book of laws.
The second most often quoted authorities were Locke, Montesquieu and Blackstone. All professing Christians who wrote voluminous amounts on the Bible and the Christian faith.
I Cr 13;8a

This is all on Congressional Records if you care to check.

EDIT: But look, don't let me confuse you with the facts. Just turn on the TV any Sunday Morning and watch all the viewer supported televangelists. 99% Christian. I never see any Atheists. Or walk down the street in any American town or city. You will come across a church or synagogue very shortly.
Check out the names of the Hospitals in your cities. St Marys,
Hollywood Presbyterian, St Joseph, Cedars-Sinai, Good Samaritan, St John's(these are all in the LA area).... get the picture?

Simply put, yes.

The basic principles of our nation come straight from Christian beliefs and English Common Right Laws. (Thank John Locke for those.)

As a nation we were founded on these principles, but we don't always act in accordance to them. We often over step our bounds and act without considering the bible. I think that freedom of religion was added to help discrimination, but at the time there was little that the founding fathers feared. If you look at more than just Christianity, you'll notice some common themes in all religions. All religions stress treating people fairly. Muhammad took many wives, as a way of rescuing them from the persecution they would have suffered had they stayed widowed. (He was alway able to support these wives though.)

If you'd like to talk to someone about this, I'll put you in contact with my mother! She's a firm believer that we ARE a Christian nation and because of that we should limit the beliefs of non-Christians and their ability to practice their religions fully. (Polygamy is a hot topic with her.)

United States is basically a Christian nation because the pioneers who established the Union were Christians and the Union was led by Christians up to this date.

well... there are two possible answers...

A. the founding fathers were playing to the crowd... in other words... just starting off a new nation, you know most people are Christian... throwing a little in there can't hurt with most folks...

or

B. they really believed it... at least some of them...

to me, I think it gets really foggy where you have both "freedom of religion" yet at the same time a governmental endorsement of one religion... that, at the very least, seems like standing on the top of a slippery slope hoping no one shoves you down it...

I'm not sure that we will ever know the exact answer... maybe a bit of both would be more true than anything...

Yes. I essence we ought to be, a christian nation with a christian majority... but Protestants sold out to Jews forming the Zionist neocons are giving the impression that the US is actually a Jewish state.
Now I hear more and more Jews admittance killing Jesus Christ offering no sorrow for doing so, maintaining their despicable hate to Christianity!
