While many are awesome and it really depends on your POV, my votes are for some oldies but goodies:
1. The Shining, The Stand, and Salem's Lot - epic pieces with lots of thought put into sequencing and layer of plot details
2. Dead Zone (my fav adaptation to a movie), Christine (my mom's fav), and Firestarter --- these achieve great heights in terms of character depth (Carrie gets a old star here too - I think he was 'just warming up' with a finally sharpened tool in it)
3. Shawshank Redemption gets the vote as 'most unlike Stephen King' piece (some will argue that's 'Stand by Me,' but I think SR is)
4. I almost answered that the novella collections are 'best' because you get variety. Truly, from "Children of the Corn" (much better in the book) to "The Mangler" - the collections provide an array of topics.
Hope this inspires some enjoyable hours of reading.

any one of a number of his novels could be considered his best depending on your taste. But its always been my oppinion that he showed the most talent in his collections of short stories particularly NIghtmares and Dreamscapes, Graveyard Shift is a definate must read as well.

Different Seasons (a book of short stories)
It inspired "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Stand By Me", which are two of the best films ever.

If I had to pick one I'd say, IT, but if I could pick a series I'd say the Dark Tower series; in a way, that's one though, as the books are all one big story.
