His range isn't what it used to be, but he only made 4 errors last season and that is amazing. I still think he is.

Having seen Rollins and Reyes play, they've got nothing on Vizquel. I think the days of Vizquel being the top defensive guy for the position are over- but he's still a top guy and you have to respect him a lot.
The best defensive guy at the position might be Alex Gonzalez- who is a machine out on the field. I would have to say as far as sure hands, he's got Vizquel beat hands down (no pun intended). However, on the other half of the inning, Vizquel is batting about 30-40 points higher- so I'd still prefer him if I somehow could afford a baseball team. By like... winning 100 lotteries or something.

You can't question Vizquel's hands. He just won a gold glove with the sixth best fielding percentage EVER by a shortstop at .993. His only fault is that at 39 he just does not get to as many balls as he used to. I would say he and Rollins are my top two, Rollins does not have the best hands, but has great range and an absolute cannon.
To respond to the post below, they give out a gold glove for each position in each league, and Vizquel plays in the NL. And while I think Jeter is a heck of a player, he is not the fielder that Vizquel is.

I grew up a diehard Indians fan, and Omar was always my favorite player, and I have mp doubt he is one of the best defensive shortstops to play the game. He never got enough credit because he is not the offensive talent of say Derek Jeter. Sorry Yankees fans, but if you had a clue you would know that OMar was better in his younger days than Jeter or AROD ever were. However, at this point in his career no matter how few errors he makes he does not have the range to still be the best in the game.

Checkout ESPN.com/mlb for a breakdown of player statistics for almost every category.
Vizquel is definitely one of the best at his position and is consistently good as are Rollins and Eckstein. The best statistically and actual are up to individual interpretation. Rollins has the best range of all the shortstops in my opinion, a great arm, and a great glove. His problem comes from trying to rush throws from balls 99% of shortstops can't get to. Of his nine errors, 7 of them were throwing errors. I don't know Vizquel's stats as far as type of errors, because I am a Phillies fan, but I argue that Rollins is better just because of his range.
Is it better to have a ball get through for a single, or a shortstop that gets to the ball and at least has a chance to make the out?

I was just reading about Vizquel in one of the new baseball annuals that just came out last week. About Vizquel, it reads "May have lost a step, but still has the great hands, feet, and body control. Throws just well enough to beat runners by a half-step". He is still very good, just not what he used to be. I think that Jimmy Rollins and maybe Jose Reyes are better now. Still, Vizquel is probably in the top 10, maybe higher.

It is clear that Ozzie Smith is the greatest defensive shortstop in history. I am not so sure Omar Vizquel is #2.

If I had to guess, going by defense alone, I would think Vizquel is still up there at the top, but I'd say Jeter is probably a better fielder. You'd have to look at their fielding percentages.

I would think so..... I watched him so many times in person and am amazed that someone can perform at a high level after so many years in the sport. I hope to see him compete in the future for a long time to come. He is an asset to my favorite team, the Giants, as well as the sport of Baseball. In person, he is a gracious man and will not deny anyone an autograph. On the field, he is a true athlete.
