By no means not a cubs fan with looking at the yanks pushing it above $200 million they didnt win just wondering if others think this is getting ridiculous or it could prove smart

It will help but its a huge risk if it doesn't. Sometimes in baseball especially it's the right mix of players, not the highest priced players. it's been a few years since the yankees have won the world series. The red sox won one year and are tying to buy another, yes spending more money might make you a contender, but how many world series will it win you? maybe none. For the cubs world series is a must and if they get there winning it is even more imperative.

The Cubs don't have a 300 million dollar pay roll, they spent 300 million dollars on the off season. But that is all paid off over years to the players. The Cubs payroll for 07 is around 120 million. Does that make them contenders? I sure hope so

Renzo is right, they are NOT a 300 million dollar team. They've just moved from spending as much as the Rangers to spending as much as the Red Sox. They are definitely not outspending the Yankees, who still spend about 40 million dollars on top of that, easily. They're spending a little ridiculously, but they're not really pushing the bubble or anything- just the length of the contracts.

Could it prove smart? Well, from the length of the contracts- I don't think it is smart. I don't see how Lilly or Soriano's deals will look good in their last couple years. But for competing, it's smart. Their division is as weak as its been in years, and they're stronger than they've been in years. They're in prime position to win the NL Central, and if they can fight through two rounds of playoffs into the World Series- they will be looking plenty smart.

the cubs payroll is not $300 million...they spent that on players this season...but they will contend as long as their big name players stay healthy and produce like they are getting paid to do...with a weak division this year they will easily contend...houston minus roger clemens will be a huge help, and no other team in that division did anything to make their team better

Unless prior and wood remain healthy and pitch well all that money could become a massive waste. D lee aramis and sori make a deadly trio hitting wise but without a couple of peeps to really back up zambrano then they going no where. dempster closing is scary too
