Well to everyone who answered with "well just look at what lincoln did, so republicans" -- Its fairly common knowledge that when Lincoln was President the Republican party was more of the progressive party BACK THEN and the demographics back this up. The northern states and west coast states were all republican states just as they are primarily democratic now. Basically the parties have flipped flop throughout the past 250 years or so. But there has been good and bad for both, I mean Vietnam was all LBJ's fault and the dems and Iraq I'll give credit to the Republicans. Both awful wars...But FDR will always be one of the greatest presidents and he was a democrat...

The good was done at the beginning of the country. Democrats and republicans have been screwing it up since. old adage If it's not broke don't fix it. just doesn't register with either party. instead we get more and more laws. and more and more government with every president. Our founding fathers were very adamant about the powers of government. and the powers that have come after wards have completely reversed all of our government policies over the last 200 plus years. The new laws give the president more power then any dictator has ever had. and the people remain oblivious. those powers have already been exercised against the law of the Constitution. It is ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL THOSE POWERS ARE EXERTED IN FULL. Good luck and God Bless

Since everyone wants to start back during Abraham Lincoln's term in office, it is true that he did stop slavery in our country and did a few other good things as well. However, we can't overlook other Presidents in our history. As for who did the best for the American people? Back during Abe Lincoln's time the Republican party stood for something good and they worked for the American people but over time, this party has changed drastically. It is a fact that the Republican party only works for the "big business" instead of the American people.

The Democratic party may not be perfect but they actually work for the American people and try to make things better for us.

LBJ is not responsible for the Vietnam war. Richard Nixon takes that responsibility. Bush, jr is responsible for the war in Iraq and Bush, sr is responsible for the Gulf war.

If you look in history you will find that just in the last thirty or forty years Republicans have put us in recession and it does in fact take Democrats to get us out.

Many American people talk about FDR and say what a great President he was. In truth, he was one of the better Presidents that we have ever had. Just some history facts for everyone, President Roosevelt was trying to get us in the war but Adolf Hitler was trying to keep us out. The reason? Adolf Hitler was afraid of the United States. True fact. Look it up.

When Pearl Harbor was attacked that was when FDR jumped into action and the U.S was pushed into WWII.

As to which party did the best for our country, it depends, especially when you are asking about going back 230 years. Republicans way back then but now it is the Democrats who are doing the good for the American people.

Any honest observers would have to admit that leaders of both parties have done some good things and some bad. On balance, you will find that people's answers tend to reflect their political affiliation.

Most people are Democrats, so there is a slight indication that the Democratic Party has done a better job than the Republican Party.

The American people had the say on this matter because they are the ones who were under the leadership of the Democrats or Republicans in different eras. Nevertheless, both parties made America great as a superpower.

Democrats by far.

Democrats have not always been pro-civil rights but then again, some ppl learn slowly. I do. I was Republican and now I am a Democrat.

The Democrats of the 20th century have consistently been the party that has saved this great nation from becoming a 3rd world country.

The best answer is that every party has tried its best to serve the nation. However, contributions of pioneers must be recognized who gave law and philosophy to rule. They deserve all credit for showing the way for a powerful State
