Since last 60 yeasr, Americans(USA) is enjoying some sort of super power status. despite all that they had very serious mistake in their foreign policy. That prompted me to ask this unusual question. I know some American foreign policy flaws. Many mistackes they did. And for that they paid heavy price too.

First of all, the USA has only been around for the last 200 and some years. Not even close to 500.

Secondly, I would say Vietnam was the biggest military blunder so far. But there have been others, such as Woodrow Wilsons invasion of Russia after world war one (which set the stage for the cold war), the bay of pigs, and of course, Iraq and Afghanistan, unless someone does something pretty quick.

The biggest military blunder in the last 60 years was our involvement in southeastern Asia, particularly the Vietnam War. At the time, there were 8 million different troops in uniform in all the combined services, 3 million served in Vietnam (not combined), $600 billion was spent on the war, we had 58,000 dead, and hundreds of thousands wounded. Why? Again, the Pentagon manufactured a lie regarding an attack by a North Vietnamese PT-boat on a US naval vessel in international waters. It never happened. Our involvement in this war began in 1963 and it ended with South Vietnam's surrender on April 30, 1975. It was the first military "loss" for the US, it caused many riots and demonstrations here at home, much division between the people, the military draft was in full swing and only the wealthy college kids got out of it, and it affected our foreign policy and reluctance to get engaged overseas for 20 years.

The worst? I would say sending way too few troops into Iraq in 2003, and lacking any real strategy for the aftermath. If we sent in at least 250-350,000 (if we had the ability) then we could have stopped the insurgency from spiraling out of control, and could have kept the Iranians, Al-Qaeda, and Syrians from entering. The war could have been over long ago...

American Patriot, have you ever heard of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction)? It's a theory that if one country nukes another country with nukes, the other country will retaliate with nukes, doing enough damage to annihilate both nations. Both sides had 1000s of launch-ready, nuclear ICBMs. If we attacked the USSR back then, neither Russia nor the US would be here today.

America has not been around for 500 years. So, anything before 1776 is really moot.
