They are not comfortable discussing the matter at the present time but want to leave their options open if they decide to discuss it later. People do have a right to their privacy and it is not necessary, or even wise, to share all their information.

Well, it really just depends on the situation. Mostly people do it when its inconvenient to offer up some explanation for some things you want done. So to save time, we just say, we'll talk later or some such excuse. However, others also do it if they're uncomfortable with the truth or if they want something to hide.

Because they are not ready to trust you with their history yet. What you should do is be patient. When that remark comes out about "it for another day" just simply smile and say, Well, that is okay with me, but you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, its okay. And go on about something else. Do not bring it up again. People tend to wait for your reaction. To see if it phases you or not. But really don't pry, if and when they want to tell you, they will when the time is right.

It depends on the situation I guess. Most times people use that line to get out of an uncomfortable situation temporarily. 6 out of 10 times they dont ever tell you.

I don't think it's politeness or rudeness either way. I believe they're saying it's not something they can address right now for personal reasons. Whether it's uncomfortable or just too darned long to go into right now.

maybe they are afraid of rejection or judgement. maybe they dont have a need to talk about that area of their life any more. they have dealt with it and dont want to dwell on the past.
sometimes people want to protect themselves from past wounds. there are many reasons. best bet is to ask the person why they dont want to talk about that issue right at the moment.

I think that it's their way of saying that they're just not ready to talk about the subject with you. Maybe one day they will be but for the time they're not going to open up.

probably they are protecting you------ in the sense that they think that you may not be well with them in the topic, or that they do not want to burden you with their issues.
besides " i dont want to talk to you about it " is a remark that definitely hurts anybody
