I have a hard time with this because I meet lots of smaller bands at shows and I find I dont know what to talk to them about. When you talk to them about their music they just classify you as a fangirl and give you "the treatment." You know, the "thanks for coming out, that means so much" and on to the next fangirl act. I would like to start a real conversation but I don't know what to say. It's hard when you have nothing to work with but the knowledge of their music. And being at their show doesnt help because there are a lot of distractions, even if you do get 1 on 1 time with them.

I've date a few guys in bands for several years but I never met them that way. From what I've observed their band mates never spoke (not really) to any girl who approached them unless they just wanted to use them for the night and then they'd just ignore them.(which the poor girls never expected from their sensitive Indie Rock crush) My advice would be to try and strike up conversation with one of the girlfriends and them maybe you'll have an in- but be cool- like when you hang with anyone- just let the conversation happen naturally. If you pay attention you can usually spot the girlfriend section- not that their unimpressed but they can get bored with it sometimes because they hear the same sets over and over again. Good luck and be careful with your heart and feelings!

hi is the first word you can say

i dont think you can get a real conversation from band members especially right after they performed. usually they are tired and streesed/busy from the big crowd.

you can only have a real chat with them after some more meetings. when they become your casual friends or they learn that your a friend/relative of someone they know or work with

What do you want to say to them? Do you think they want to hear it, and they would care? When I get offstage I almost tell people to f*ck off and leave me alone - I am sweaty, want to shower & party, not listen to kids drooling over my songs & telling me how they discovered the meaning of life in a line I don't even remember I wrote. Cool, great, glad for you, thanks for coming, bye. You like the band, buy a CD & let them be.

Generally something like "how would you like to be the next guy that brags about being with me?" will get their attention.

Ask them about their roots and their playing rather than their looks. Something to set you apart. Don't overkill or over-dress either.
