People today are very judgmental. You probably are too. People judge you today based on what they know a few skaters have done in the past. It is the same way as if someone sees a nerdy looking kid with glasses, and think that he must be smart. Don't let them get to you. Keep doing what you love and just ignore them. If Martin Luther King Jr. or Johnny Cash had given up because of what people thought of them, they would have never been great.

Because skaters (at least here in Southern California) have a tendency to run people off sidewalks, damage the finish on handrailings and stairs, use loud and rude vocabulary, leave cigarrette butts and trash everywhere, and create a general disturbance in the peace of a city park. Besides all that, when folks get annoyed and ask them to leave, they tend to cop a major attitude.
My personal gripe is with the skaters who shoot down the sidewalks in my apartment complex at all hours of the day and night. The sound of a skateboard rolling down a seamed sidewalk in a narrow alley can wake the dead, and when a dude f*s up flipping his skateboard, the thing lands with such a loud cracking noise that it can wake my 2 yr old out of a dead-sleep.
Skateboarding is a cool sport; I just wish the skaters would show a little more courtesy to those around them.

Here I go, showing my age, but you wanna know, so here goes:
In the days before skate parks, we made our own. We ground curbs in parking lots and rode rails in parks and train/ bus depots. Needless to say, this wasn't good for the curbs or the rails. So, skaters got a reputation as destructive vandals. Also, skaters tended, naturally, to loiter in public places, gathering to skate and watch. (Laws against skating were passed in most cities because of this.) And it didn't help that most of them had a fashion style that differed from the rest of the crowd.
You might be encouraged to know that this attitude has changed a lot in the last twenty years. Most cities (and a lot of towns) have public skate parks now. Keep on skatin' and spreading the love and it will continue to change.

When people get older they forget how it was to be young. They think on a different level. Not necessarily a better or higher level, just different. If you are hanging out in front of businesses you have to understand that they are trying to make money. They cant make money if the people they are trying to sell to are scared to go into the store because of a bunch of skaters are hanging out. Plus, if one of you get hurt, you could sue (not saying you'd win the case) and then their insurance goes up. Mostly though, people just forget what it was like to be young.
