ohhhhhh yeah. and it angers me when they complain about not getting paid enough. i love sports but i dont consider it a career that deserves a payroll of hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars per player. most people i know would do anything to experience one day in a pro athlete's shoes and its crazy that these people are being paid enormous amounts of money doing something that isnt helping anybody but only for pure entertainment. but... we do live in a twisted society and everybody has got bills to pay i guess.

Pro Athletes are entertainment talent and certainly deserve a share of the large revenues that professional sports make. In the NBA the salary cap is structured so that the percentage that players (as opposed to owners) get is around 50%. I put a link below to a FAQ about NBA salaries and the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). If you think players are paid too much, what percentage do you think they deserve?

Certainly 10million + a year that the top athletes make is a lot of money, but this is comparable to top movie stars who make $10 million per movie or sitcom stars who make up to $1 million per episode.

I actually feel a bit better about the top athletes making this kind of money, because I feel fairly sure they are the best in the world. That is, I feel fairly certain that all the people who have the talent and work ethic to score 20 points per game in the NBA are actually in the NBA. In constrast, there are tons of talented actors around who may be even more talented than the ones making millions, but they are not because they did not have the right connections or get the right lucky break.

Some people complain about athletes stiking to get more money. Certainly it is any employees right to negotiate for the percentage of revenue/profits that they feel they are entitled too. However, the last couple "strikes" in professional sports, have not been strikes, but "lockouts", where basically owners refuse to let games be played until a new salary agreement is put into effect (even though the one both players are owners previously agreed to is still in effect). This was the case with the 1998 lockout in the NBA.

I just wish some kind of salary cap or collective bargaining agreement were in effect for CEOs -- particularly the ones who layoff tons of workers to increase their own compensation or the ones who run the company into the ground and still leave with huge retirement packages.

By the way, I would certainly agree that teachers are on the whole quite underpaid (as are social workers and many other professionals), but I do not see how reducing athletes salaries (and thus increasing the wealth of already wealthy team owners) would remedy this. If you believe teachers or other public employees are underpaid, you can however remedy this by always voting for school levies and encouraging your legistlators to put more money into education and other areas that you feel workers are underpaid.

It's what the market bears. In some sports with salary caps, they probably are too restricted.

The market bears what it does. You can't say " Soldiers/Teachers/whoever don't make enough, so Yes, blah blah blah" That makes NO sense.

Pro athletes work in multi-billion dollar industries. Civil/public servants,etc- CHOOSE to work in fields where they are expected to sacrifice and are free to choose to work in more lucrative fields. They choose instead to serve "regular" folks, some who can't afford anything. Athletes and entertainers work for paying customers who choose to buy their services.

The premise is faulty. If an athlete gets paid less, will a teacher or soldier get paid more? Heck, NO. The Owners, Cable Companies, etc will make more.

Someone is spending the money and its only right that the people who actually generate the income receive the fruits.

Anyone can state an opinion, but unless you actually sign someone's check or are some far out socialist, you really can't say who is over/under-paid. Most likely almost 100% of all people are paid very close to what they are worth.

These guys are idolized by so many people. These fans get the misconception that their own egos are founded on how well
"their" team fare in competition.

On the other hand, these athletes are like entertainers akind to big name rock stars or actors who are also paid very very well.

In and of themselves no. There is high demand for what they can do, and they usually are the cream of the crop. Compared to what the the team owners and tv networks make, player salaries are peanuts.

Among themselves, yes. I think that leagues should use rules to control team salary ranges, such as with the NFL. The money disparity in MLB is ridiculous.

Yes, I do. I realize it is a year round thing for them for even during off season they are preparing for the upcoming season. It has to be taken into consideration the wear & tear on their bodies, but I still feel it's too much...at least for some. They all don't make the same amount~

Yes way too much!
We've got troops risking/laying down their lives and barely making ends meet back home who could use a break.
We've got underpaid teachers dealing with today's disrespectful reckless misguided children.
We've got surgeons saving lives but having difficulties getting paid due to our terrible health care system.
Oh I could go on for days on this one...YES way overpaid !!!

YES, and if you really look at some of the games really close. Like one of my bookie buddies said the percentage of games that are being fixed are getting higher and higher, there starting to look like pro wrestling. I'm starting to only watch college sports.
