I would like something that is elegant, evergreen, flowers for a good period of the growing season and is durable.
Stress is on looking good.

I love Origanum anf Thyme for ground cover, and they'll flower for much of the summer. Plus some herbs to pick for the kitchen.

There's also a variety of the Lady's Mantle that is wonderful - Alchemilla mollis 'Thriller'. Bright yellow flowers that continue for a couple of months.

Overall, it will depend on your situation - how much shade and whether dry etc.

There are some 'dead' nettles that do well as ground cover - they don't sting, hence the 'dead' bit. Try Lamium purpureum, purple flowered or Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver'. If not, visit a nursery and find a variety that you like.

There are a few Hebe's that you could use, like Hebe pinguifolia 'Pagei'. Have used this for years. White flowered, with grey/silver foliage.

Good luck! Rob

the only one i can think of that is evergreen and durable is bergenia cordifolia. but it only blooms for about 3 weeks in early spring. The more elegant and long blooming groundcovers are not evergreen.

Vinca major is a charming shrub, it flowers from March to June and again in autumn. It has bright blue flowers and spreads to form a carpet of glossy evergreen leaves. 1-11/2ft. x

I always use 'Purple Clover' ground cover type. It's a lovely plant if left to flower, but it's also good for the soil if dug in just before flowering as a green manure.

How about ground covering Cotoneasters. They're evergreen, some have small flowers and/or berries.
