This is especially bad in the US. I wish we didn't have hyphenated anything. Just Americans. Claim your country, which is what the Olympics is about.

I concur. I dont like being called African American. Im part cuban, scottish, asian and jamaican. At which point am I African??? I have no idea. And Africa is a continent!!!! With MANY MANY MANY different cultures. As far as Egypt to the Ivory Coast. African is generalizing. I dont hear anybody saying European American or Asian American. For the most part I consider my self Jamerican or Black

It's a better term than using the word "black". I have got nothing against this word; in fact in Arabic "Black" stands for dominance, and in Turkish "Black" stands for bravery...but in English, "Black" is usually a term of darkness and evil.
Yes, I'm an African (from Egypt), but am white like the Europeans (even much lighter in colour than most Spaniards, Italians and Greeks)...however, the term "African Americans" is just a notification that these people originated in Sub-Saharan Africa and then migrated to America; nothing else.

some Black human beings are uncomfortable being recognised as such, yet they make up a minority. after all different communities have only discovered it a lot less complicated to stay away from making use of the colour time period on the rate of cultural sensitivity. no longer all Black human beings have an identical subculture. i'm no longer even particular how the time period "African American" grew to develop into popularized because it not in any respect took immigrant Black human beings under consideration, inspite of if it might want to be more desirable wisely utilized to first era human beings from Africa. that's led to more than a number of misunderstanding, yet no longer many human beings talk up about it. I facepalm each and every time I see Colin Powell called African American even as both his dad and mom are IMMIGRANTS from Jamaica. it really is a finished slap in the face of his cultural historic previous so some distance as i'm worried. there's a shared adventure of being Black in u . s . a . yet that does no longer unavoidably equate to an identical subculture. because of this i'm dissatisfied by technique of Afro-Latinos who do not talk Spanish, because maximum of them stay their lives ethnicless and get the African American label, furthering perpuating the issue of Afro-Latino invisibility in the U.S.

Here's a real question for you... how many "african americans" living in the US have actually ever even seen the African continent... any part of it? I don't like the stereotypes we face here in the US because there are so many that think that this race is better than that one, and that one is better than this other one... We are all just people, and none better than the rest...
Hope this helps...

But why do people from other races concerned about what blacks are called. Leave it alone. It's true im not fond of the term but im not going around worrying about it all day long, or the fact that some whites are polish, swedish ancestary but its not ok to say swedish-american. Because as far as i'm concerned none of us really know what our backgrounds are. I could be part white, native american , and african. But just because i'm black doesnt mean that im part african. Just you know its a tough world, we all have to live with the flaws.
