I am going to spray paint an automotive urethane paint on my 20 year old bass boat that has a badly degraded gel coat finish. Should I use a HVLP or a LVLP spray gun? And what is the difference between the two?

hvlp--is high volume low pressure gravity feed
which means it's filled on top
lvlp--is low volume low pressure--has suction feed
the best are HVLP and are my personal favorite

Aside from providing an uneven spray pattern theirs something a bit bigger to consider. The quality of the paint is not going to be the same, especially in the case of clearcoat. The clear is meant to keep your basecoat from fading & to do that you need an activated clear. The lacquer clearcoat from the cans does not provide much basecoat protection and will fade very quick, you need a mixable clear (called a 2k) that uses a hardener. I would strongly recommend spending a little more on some proper materials as the paint will last much longer, I know around here you can even pick up a spray gun that will get the job done for under $30!

Ask the people who sell your paint. They should have a good idea what'll work best with the paint you're spraying. Also see the links below.
