Federally: an employee must be at least 16 years old to work in most non-farm jobs and at least 18 to work in non-farm jobs declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor. Youths 14 and 15 years old may work outside school hours in various non-manufacturing, non-mining, non-hazardous jobs under the following conditions:No more than:
3 hours on a school day or 18 hours in a school week;
8 hours on a non-school day or 40 hours in a non-school week.

Also, work may not begin before 7 a.m. or end after 7 p.m., except from June 1 through Labor Day, when evening hours are extended to 9 p.m. Different rules apply in agricultural employment.

---------------------
State laws may apply additional protections, but the federal law governs the minimum requirements.

No child under 18 can work unless an onsight school is present and the child is enrolled and attending. Children are permitted to work at 16 but they must have a work permit issued by their school. They are limited to certain kinds of work. Child movie stars are best example, although there are many ways to get around certain laws such as how much time before the camera, etc.

Kids can go to work at age 14 with a work permit from the school and express permission of their parents. However, the school will insist on keeping a record of the hours worked and he/she cannot go over the limit.

There are restrictions up to age eighteen, but they vary by state. Some states have restrictions on certain jobs up to age 21. (Operating heavy machinery, for instance.)
