I know what you mean.. They keep coming up to the surface of the water or the side of the glass everytime they see you. I suspect it's also a matter of conditioning. Everytime they see you, they get food so you become to dinner bell. If you feed them at regular times, their stomachs will tell them when it's time to eat again.. Well, fish can get FAT. I had a snakehead that I fed on frogs and feeder fish and he was plump. No other way to describe him. The safest thing for you to do is to just feed enough for your fish to consume in 5 minutes and repeat (at most) three times a day. Studies have shown fish actually live longer if not overfed. Overfeeding also leads to a huge amount of waste in the water, which is simply not good either. Fish in the wild don't come across food all the time. Some aquariums now even starve their fish one day a week.

My goldfish looks tubby as well. But they can't gain weight. If you over feed them however they could die. They don't really beg for food although it seems like they do. I know my gold fish is always tying to find food around his tank and when I come around he quickly swims to the top of the tank. There memory is so short and there life is so simple and with them being bottom feeders all they really think about is swimming and food.
You really should only feed your fish once or twice a day though. But not too much. Just a pinch should do the job.

Yes fish get fat and unhealthy if overfed.
Their stomach is the same size as their eye.
Never feed them more than twice a day,( though the jar of food will say more often, b/c the manufacturer is trying to sell you more fish food.)
Never feed more than they can consume in 2 - 3 minutes, after that it just sits at the bottom and pollutes the water, unless you have a good stock of bottom feeders like Plecos/ catfish etc.

you should find out the anatomy of the fish you have and where their stomachs are. usually the stomach is in front of the anal fin which can be anywhere on the underside. on most long bodied fish they stomachs look like they swallowed little peas if they get fat. its a good sign its time for a fish diet.

You can over feed your fish and they can die from it. Just feed your fish 1-2 times a day in VERY SMALL AMOUNTS! Fish dont beg... I dont even think they think like that.

Every living thing thing gets fat if they eat too much. And the reason why fishes don't eat too much is because if they get fat they float up the surface of the water and they can breath no more.

depend on what kind of fish you have. some goldfish tend to look chubby even if you feed them little food.
