RE:
How long does beer or alcohol stay in breast milk, if you drink it right after breastfeeding?
Every night I breast feed my child, and unwind with beer or wine. It's a glass of either or. This is usually around 9-10 at night. He doesn't wake till around 10 in the morning. He is 3 months old.

I had a few drinks every now and again when I was nursing. I'd nurse the baby and THEN have the drink (say wine with dinner for example) so that by the next time he nursed it'd be metabolised and out of the milk. The general rule of thumb is if you're sober enough to drive it's okay to nurse. If you're really worried (or you're going out for a night and getting hammered) you can pump a small freezer stash and have the caregiver feed him with a dropper/cup (bottle too early can confuse him) and then pump and dump until you feel sober. It's really not necessary unless you're getting really hammered though.

There is some good info at the following site:
"If you plan to have an alcoholic beverage when breastfeeding, breastfeed your baby before having a drink and allow a couple of hours to pass after the drink (or second drink) before breastfeeding afterward. It will take longer for your body to rid itself of "heavy" amounts of alcohol, so if you become intoxicated, pump your milk every few hours to avoid uncomfortable engorgement but don`t save that milk to give your daughter."
http://www.netwellness.org/question.cfm/16959.htm
"La Leche League's THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING (p. 328) says:
The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount the mother ingests. When the breastfeeding mother drinks occasionally or limits her consumption to one drink or less per day, the amount of alcohol her baby recieves has not been proven to be harmful."

Alcohol is in your breastmilk in about the same concentration as it is in your blood. So for most people 1 drink clears the bloodstream in 1-2 hours, same for breastmilk. If you are waiting to drink until after his last feeding of the day, you are doing the right thing. No need to pump; your circulatory system will remove the alcohol from the milk.

If u had a drink right after u have emptied its usually not going to be a problem . It takes the liver 1 hour per drink so one beer or glass of wine is harmless. if youre worried try to pump and have some put just in case u decide to have alil more.

Wow, there are so many people out there who are going to cream you for posting this question.( the angry perfect mommy's) I for one used to breastfeed and I too would unwind at night with a beer or wine. Alcohol with metabolize itself out of your system in a few hours. You're fine and so is your baby. If you are concerned I would ask your doctor. Believe it or not this is a common question.

Actually beer/alcohol stays in your system for 72 hours after drinking. If you waited for two hours your infant would STILL be getting a certain amount of that alsohol whether you pumped or not.

Usually 2 hours but I would pump or something like 4 hours before he nurses just to make sure its out of your system and so that you can produce more... I hope this was helpful!! And remember to drink PLENTY of water afterwards since beer will dehydrate you!
