Because air is a mixture containing Nitrogen and Oxygen and the rapid chemical combination of Magnesium with Oxygen (to give MgO) is so hot, some of the Magnesium will also combine with Nitrogen to form Magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2).

The final products would contain Magnesium and Oxygen or Magnesium and Nitrogen.

Magnesium oxide, being a metal oxide, is called a base. This reaction, in which two elements combine to form one product, is called a synthesis reaction.

Magnesium will react with oxygen in air .
2Mg + O2 --> 2MgO
There is no element in the product, the product formed is ionic compound, which is white in colour.
