dont know any science side,but the doldrums
they referring to is roughly in the area between
the latitudes 10 -20 south,where they lost the ne tradewinds in the atlantic.
sailingships from europe,sailing to round cape
the good hope,sailed first sw,until they lost
the ne trade close under the brazilian coast before heading se,towards the cape.

The doldrums are the seas associated with the equatorial trough. This moves north and south of the equator with the summer seasons. The doldrums are marked by very light winds with rainshowers. There are occasional hurricanes/typhoons/tropical cyclones.
