I have an incompetent cervix, and preterm labor. I have been on bedrest since 27 weeks (ARGHH!) and in a good deal of discomfort from the baby being so low. Somehow I have made it to term, I am only 2.5 cm dilated and 90% effaced, and baby is at +1. Here's my issue, my ob wants to induce on Feb 26, due to "risk of rapid labor onset". He wrote the orders out for Pitocin, but I am terrified of taking it. (autism, jaundice?) I am only 15-20 minutes away from my hospital, and I am already on maternity leave, so I don't think I will have any problems making it on time...I would feel selfish inducing anyway even though I can't hardly even walk at this point. I am starting to have contractions that I can feel but they are not regular or painful, and my discharge is looking more clear and thinner, whatever that means!
Was anyone else induced with a method other than Pitocin? What about sweeping the membranes instead?

When i did a Google search, it suggested searching Pitocin and Autism. When i read some links, it said Pitocin could increase the risk of autism and does cause jaundice on occasion.

Thanks for the info! I am having an epidural (even though that scares me too, I realize I will probably want it :) I am just medicine-phobic and would rather do it naturally, but that's just not practical. No, I am not on any meds to stop labor, somehow I managed to prevent preterm labor with bedrest.

Are you on meds to stop labor? Or just bed rest?
If you are on meds to stop labor many times they will give PIT to control the strength of the contractions. Or if you lack the uterus strength.
I would see if you can have a Epidural Analgesia during labor to for comfort. If you are worried you can not take the pain.
If your worries are jaundice and autism they are valid worries but so low of a risk i would try to read as much as you can so you understand how low of a risk it is.
And the discharge meaning more clear and thinner is you have lost your mucus plug so now it is just your hormones giving you a normal pregnant discharge without the tinge of blood that comes with the mucus plug.
Congrats take care.

I know how you feel I was on bed rest with both of my children at 27 weeks for the same reason as you and it is hard. I didn't have to have pitocin with either one of my pregnancy but I have a couple of friends that was given pitocin during their labors and there was no problems from it. Just remember everything that happens in labor including the medicines they give you to speed up labor or to control pain all have there risks. I wish you the best of luck and hope your delivery goes well.

I was 5 days late with my son and my water had broken but I was not dailating and my contractions were irregular. The doctor then gave me pitocin. The contractions are alot more painful then regular labor contractions. I ended up having to ask for an epidural. My son is now seven years old and he does not have autism and did not have jaundice.

Is there really a link between pitocin and autism and jaundice? It's very common for a baby to be jaundiced anyways. My two kids were. I had pitocin with both of them. One time to help my labor along and the other to start it. It wasn't that bad.

I have never heard of a connection between pitocin and autism or jaundice. Where did you get that info? Speak with your Dr. about membrane stripping. Worked for my friend. But not a proven method like pitocin is.

I hated pitocin induction! basically my very own journey. i grew to become into precipitated at 37 weeks for top blood stress. They first gave me 5 doses of the medicine cycotac or something like that each and each physique i comprehend is its no longer fda authorized yet a lot of medical doctors use it to soften the cervix reason I wasn't dilated or something as quickly as I went in to be precipitated. That wasn't so undesirable whilst i ultimately began to dilate they positioned me on pitocin. My contractions have been given so good and that they've been consistent on actual of that they had to provide up it two times reason it led to my sons heart fee to drop. The epidural did no longer paintings for me so I felt each consistent contraction. i'm hoping my next being pregnant i will flow organic reason i do no longer p.c. to flow via that back. that's basically my very own journey.

I had my labor started with pitocin and i had no problems the only thing is that it made my labor pains much much harder so they gave me a epidural. They had to induce me because i was way late i carried my son for 10 months and he was in trouble. so it was no choice because he was going to die. But he is fine.

Well when i was induced they did sweep the membranes but then 2 days later i went into labor. My water didnt break for ether of my children. You might wanna ask your doctor for a clear cut reason why he wants to do that. Do what he says is best for your baby!
Good luck!

my dr put me on pitocin after my labor wasnt progressing as he liked it to. was my second baby, my first was not induced. labor was alot more painful being induced, sry to say. the baby did have a very mild form of jaundice. but they kept him under a light for a while, and when we got home told me to keep him in sunlight and it went away. if you get induced, take the epidoral if possible. was twice as painful for me.

If you get Potocin, get an epidural!!!! I have gone natural with ALL my kids even the last which was induced with pitocin, it it wicked stuff on the contractions. There is not a link to defects, don't worry about that, but it does hurt about 1000X's worse than your own natural contractions. I learned the hard way, please get the epy!!!!! But I do suggest taking your doctor's recommendation, he knows what he is doing! I was on bed rest too, don't take ANY chances!!! Please listen to your doc....
