I was looking at southern Alabama or Geogia, or northern Florida. I need job opportunities (teaching?) or Accounting, good school for my 8-year old daughter, and reasonable living costs. I would like a neighborhood with sidewalks, not just interstate. Help. Thanks.

Fairhope, Foley, Mobile, Alabama are in a boom at this time. Fairhope has some really good schools. Sort of like small town living with the purks of big cities.

Well it's not the south, But it does have a good job market. Several thousand open jobs in this town alone.more in the rest of the state. Very good schools. Very low crime rate. Very friendly people. The rude people are the ones that have moved here from other states. We do have cold and snow--the worst winter we have had in years. Good wages--a substitute teacher is paid 90.00 a day weather they work one hour of that day or 7 hours. The county had an overage of 4.5 million that they handed out to all the school workers last year for a bonus. I don't know how much everyone got or how often that happens. but it was a nice bonus. there are 10 elementary schools, 2 middle and 2 high schools. The cost of living is not so great, But it is a very laid back lifestyle. No stress. No one is in a hurry. Great place to raise kids. If you would like more info--e-mail me.

Florida is probably a little more expensive to live in because of the hurricanes. It won't matter that you're not living on the beach when it comes to paying your share for state taxes and insurance. Alabama is also exposed to hurricane damage, but not as much as Florida. Georgia gets hit once in a while, but the people there drive like MANIACS!!!

I'm a trucker and have been everywhere and have seen things from a different perspective. Being a teacher, work will always be easy to find for yourself.

Have ya thought about Texas? East Texas is not too hot and the small towns are friendly, the winters are mild and snow is somewhat scarce.

Atlanta is a beautiful city with wonderful people.

Something you'd need to be prepared for is that the south is full of extreme religious bigots. Literally the first question people ask when they meet you - and this includes little kids meeting little kids - is 'what church do you belong to?' They are openly hostile to religious minorities, catholics, and to atheists. They are openly hostile to gays.
The level of ignorance is very high and it's discouraging at times.

Also, while PA and NY folk are friendly and open, and honest and straight up, many southern people have a sickeningly sweet veneer that doesn't quite hide their contempt and disdain. Coming from the more normal north, you'll notice and it'll be weird.

Northern Virginia might be as far into Dixie as you'd like to go.

Northern Florida is deliverance country, a right wing cess pool.

My husband is retired military currently living in Wisconsin, and we have lived lots of places. We are currently planning to move to the south (again). We really love the climate in Sierra Vista, AZ, but the price of a house (around 1700 sq ft) is about $350,000. We have been looking at houses near Florence, SC and the same house is less than half that. There are also some nice areas near Raleigh with reasonable houses, (like Clayton). Raleigh also has a very hot job market. They also have subdivisions with sidewalks.

Dude, don't head south. You wan't to head west. Try Iowa, the winters can be unexpeting, but the winters are mild and the jobs out here actually pay desent amount of money like Des Moines. There are also small communities around Des Moines like, Norwalk, Waukee, Indianola, Newton, ect.

Do not move to Fla then, the cost of living vs wages(unless your coming w/$) isn't worth it.
Taxes on homes and OMG home owners insurance!!!
Look up local news paper, look at crime rates, jobs and homes, it will help.
