Good question. Check out Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and you'll see that as long as people don't have the basic tools of survival, it's almost impossible to consider higher concerns.

Luckily, most Americans have the basic tools of survival!

Two differing premises to your question - (1) patriotism = the love and honor for ones country and to defend it at all cost - (2) economic difficulties = Local, State, and Federal agencies working together for that common cause of self-sufficiency, and helping the poor, elderly, and disabled.

Patriotism will trump the economic status every-time an international conflict occurs - for the sake of the entire country, for the most part. International conflicts will offset any economy by reacting or failure to react, both ways monies loss. Local governments are more to blame then anyone else for each states economic growth, the abuse of federal funding at the local level is overwhelming, and fails to meet its objectives and stated goals of each grant given.

No. It's a primary concern when one realizes that they are in a situation where they have the freedom and opportunity to work their way out of economic difficulties, however.

That's why, throughout US history, immigrants were so patriotic, while so many settled Americans took their opportunities for granted.

i think patriotism is a word for politicians to try to use to brainwash people to a sheep like mentality when we go to school from a young age we are taught to stand up for what is right. when the rulers of a country are doing wrong we as a nation for the good of our nation should not allow ourselves to be taken in to lies and deciet.
