I know a guy who had a tough time at school his whole educational career. He wasn't a special ed student per se, but he was always near the bottom of his class. He failed a grade in elementary school and wound up quitting high school half-way through his Sophomore year at the age of 17. A few years later he completed a GED but right now he's cleaning toilets. He tells me he's thinking of picking up a few classes at night learning auto mechanics. I wish him the best, but I'm also hoping he isn't getting in over his head. I know that today's cars are a lot more technically sophisticated than they were 10 years ago. To work on cars today I believe you need a lot more training and intelligence than what the average "grease monkee" did ten, twenty years ago.

Can a guy who's not terribly bright still make it in the car mechanics trade? Or what about him possibly looking for a job in a mechanical specialty shop like a place that specializes in just mufflers, oil changes, or tires?

On the one hand, cars are more complex now than they were 10-15-20 years ago. On the other hand, the diagnostic tools and computer memory banks and stuff around now make it a lot easier to isolate what's going on with the car.

If a car has a "check engine" light on, they can plug it in to the diagnostic computer, and the computer will spit out that the forward oxygen sensor is reporting crazy values, and it should be replaced.

If your friend has a passion for it, then he can do it!

Being a mechanic is a hands, get down and do it kind of job. I believe this guy could do well at being a mechanic. Never limit yourself to what IQ tests tell you; you must remember that IQ tests usually just test your academic ability. Just because someone isn't an academic, it does not mean that they cannot be successful at something else. This guy definately go for a career/trade that is non-academic.
