Pacifica Pier goes out for a quarter mile off of the coast of Pacifica, California (by San Francisco). Is it ok to spread my grandfather's ashes there?

No. Health and Safety Code section 7117 requires that any disposal of remains must be 500 yards from the shoreline, and prohibits disposing of them from a bridge or pier. My calculation (and I am no mathematician) is that 1/4 mile is 440 yards, so it is both too close AND a pier.

As others say, you have the ability to do lots of things that are against the law. Whether you try it depends upon your own personal morality and your fear of being caught.

Nope. It's still too close to land. But there are a couple companies that run a boat out into the water and have a ceremony and everything while you spread the ashes.

We just spread my mom in law's ashes in Crystal Cove south of LA in Mid january. It was very nicely done.

You can opt for religious or non religious ceremonies.

I don't know the expense - she set it up and paid for it before she died. It was what she wanted to do.

It depends on the laws of the State. In Ohio, ashes can be spread anywhere because they are considered 'clean'. If it's not your property, however, you must get permission from the property owner. We put the ashes of a person of whom I was legal guardian in our yard and planted a rose over them.

Look up the laws for California and see what they require, or call a funeral home. That's how I got the information about Ohio.

Of course it is. There have never been any restrictions in that area. There are lots of people, (vets of WWII) who have had their families spread their ashes over the waters at Pearl Harbor.

Everything's legal if you don't get caught. Don't make a big deal about it and let it fly. Try Maverick's by Half Moon Bay.
