dns is a protocol that lets you convert a URL like www.yahoo.com to its actual IP address like 202.141.23.12 (thats not the correct yahoo IP though, I just made that one up!)
DNS stands for Domain Name Space
There exist various servers across the world which maintain a list of conversions for URL to IP
the protocol connects to one of them and obtains the correct IP and from there, other protocols like HTTP etc take over and send data/ask for data from that IP

Remember that a url like www.yahoo.com is simply there for human readability. Actual data over the net transmission needs the IP.

Though IP addresses allow computers and routers to identify each other efficiently, humans prefer to work with names rather than numbers. The Domain Name System - DNS - supports the best of both worlds. I cant paste the whole article but you can view it here :

DNS stand for (Domain Naming Server).it is use for resolving the ip addres.it resolve name to ip and ip to name by keeping record
