I was thinking about purchasing one off eBay just to have something different. I remember how hyped it was back upon its initial release (late high school for me), but that it was very short lived afterwards.

I have owned the Playstation 2 ever since it came out, and I currently own a Playstation 3. I know it obviously wouldn't compare to the Ps3, but how does it hold up against the Ps2?

I am just interested in owning an obsure system, and after viewing some screenshots of Dreamcast games on the internet, I believe that this one has potential. So only respond if you have had experience with the system yourself.

It's a purely subjective answer.

From a hardware standpoint, Sega Dreamcast was easier to develop for, less expensive to develop for, was the first system online-playable right out of the box, and cost less at retail. It was also released a year earlier.

However, the PS2 was way more powerful, played DVD movies right out of the box, and had the beenfit of a much stronger 3rd party support network. This March, the PS2 will be offically 7 years old. A platform that was viable for 7 years, of course, will be a sales leader.

Dreamcast WASN'T a failure. It did very well in Japan, and was marginally successful in North America and Europe. It just pales in comparison to the explosive success of PS2, which nobody (not even Nintendo or Microsoft) could touch at the time.
Dreamcast's discontinuation was the result of Sega's massive interal restructuring, and eventual merging with Sammy into Sega Sammy Holdings - one of the largest 3rd party game developers and publishers on the planet.

If you like 2D fighting games from SNK and Capcom, and original Sega games, the Dreamcast is a great buy. There are a lot of blockbuster games that were exclusive to Dreamcast, or where the Dreamcast had a better port. For very cheap, it's a great addition to any gamers collection. Plus, there's a deep homebrew community, and lots of cheap mods for your console and controllers that are a lot of fun for tinkerers.

Although PS2 had more powerful processors than the Dreamcast , some games , like Guilty Gear ,actually looks better on Dreamcast than on the PS2
The system HAD potential back then , but as with all Sega consoles , it died young .
Go ahead with the purchase if you like what was offered on the system .

sadly It was not as good. Not even close.
here is my experience:

-Paid around $500 for system a controler and a VMU( video memory unit).
- About a week later the VMU battere died.
-I had sonic witch was graphicly impressive but a kinda crapy game overall.
- sysem was prone to lagg in some of the games I rented
- after about 3 to 6 months the video store near my house stopped renting games.
- there were almost no exclusive titles on dream cast.
- overall a 1 out of 10

but that said you should go for it. How expensive can it be?
and I'm sure there will be enough games for you to have a good time with. Many CPS2 and CPS3 games were released for dream cast and I think they're easy to find and cheap. So if your a street fighter nut like me its a good move.

i liked my dreamcast while i had it. in terms of power it was comparable to the ps2, in some ways it was even more powerful.

it was also noisy however and the controller, while comfortable, was sadly lacking in buttons and joysticks, so games were more difficult to control on it. the VMUs were an interesting idea but their batteries died quickly and then they were just an overwrought memory card that cost too much.

seaman was an interesting game if you have the patience to keep your seamn alive long enough. dead or alive was fun on it, tomb raider. its got some good games.

personally if i found one cheap, i'd buy it again, i regret selling mine.

yes i owned a dreamcast and the graphics were as good if not better than ps2. i think in people's minds the ps2 was better because they had more advertising and support. to me the ps2 was overhyped. dreamcast never got the recognition that it deserved which is sad :(

the earlier playstation game graphics were somewhat comparable to dreamcast, but im kinda an old school girl and like all that old junk like dream cast, nintindo 64, NES, and ataris....yes i have all of them...but its not bad to have an old "antique" game system because many of the game they had you obviously cant play now if they werent made for the newer systems....
