In Mary Pipher's book "Reviving Ophelia" she suggests that, along with classes for women so they can protect themselves, we ought to have classes that teach people that rape and attack and assault, etc are wrong. (In Rhode Island there was a study done - both male and female participants- and they came out that 87% of the kids thought that, at one point or another, rape was an appropriate action. There's still a common feeling that, if it happened, she/he got what they deserved. Sad.) My mom and I were talking, and she suggested that they give it as a required class at the high school. For both boys and girls. So, I've only ever heard of this brought up by Mary Pipher. Why haven't I heard of this idea before? Are there people who don't want this to happen, and that's why it hasn't been talked about? So, in Sociology we talked about the idea that maybe the economy determines a lot of our life. so, are there people who get paid, in one way or another, when someone is attacked?

It's funny you should ask !Just 2 days ago I posted a long rant on my abuse survivors group's sight about how rape is glorified in the media and glamorized to the point that it's ussually in the top 3 in all the U.S. surveys taken of women's fantasies! My rant began when I had the t.v. on for noise and was assaulted by the sounds of rape which I found was being enacted on a soap opera ! They had a bride in a wedding dress, barely conscios, in a hospital bed, being raped by a man ! She was struggling a bit and making all the usual protest that go with Americam media rape but it was more like a session of love making then the violent, brutal, soul shattering expierience that rape is !Someone was raped that day right here in my room !I was raped as surely by NBC as if they had raped my physical self ! By selling rape as entertainment and not unmasking it's true face they are condoning, encouraging, and increasing it ! I also feel that they are spitting on the pain of those of us who've Survived it ! Those ideas of classes in school are great ! I'm getting that book tomorrow ! If you contact me I'll forward a copy of my original rant . But I imagine you'll get my gist from this. PEACE.

Well, for one thing, the only people who get paid when someone is attacked is maybe the hospitals, insurance companies, and the lawyers if they take it that far. But look at it this way - we still have trouble convincing some parents that their kids need to have basic sexuality classes. I have a friend who got married a few years ago who was convinced that you couldn't get pregnant the first time you had sex. She was early 20's. She found out differently REALLY quick. If we could just get around the teaching kids about HIV and what exactly sex is and its consequences, then maybe we can start with higher order sexuality. Plus with a violent society, and granted, girls who like to tart it up, it's a subject that you'll never be able to hammer home. Not to be a cynic or anything, but I think it's hopeless. This kind of stuff you learn at home.

er no. See, this is why kids in Singapore are better at math than Americans -- why teach actual math when you can spend a whole semester telling kids they should not commit violent felonies? At least make the class optional so that the Asian kids trying to get into the Ivy League schools won't have to waste their time.

maybe if you gotta tell someone that something is wrong it really isn't...people are born wkowing what is right and wrong...I suspect they are mischaracterizing the situation of rape in order to get this ridiculous response

Caleb Matthew is spectacular, i might swap it to Matthew Caleb nonetheless for a ten/10! Clara Amelia would not bypass via fact they the two bring about 'ah'. Amelia Claire might get a ten/10 from me.

Yes, we have to educate the youth that rape and assault are wrong. It is wrong to justify and say that they deserved it.
Yes, the police departments get paid with hefty budget, when someone is attacked. They have to set up counter measures and increase the police strength.

i think its ridiculous for someone to think rape is ok...rape is never ok no matter what...and people never get what they deserved by getting raped

i think why they don't have a class about it is because its so hard to talk about
i had to take a living skills class and they barely talked about rape, i think because its such a hard topic to cover and its really hard for people to listen to someone talking about rape
but i agree with you that they should talk about that in school so people won't think that rape is appropriate at one point

Or you could go with what works and have PARENTS raise their sons right so they respect women.
