The dough is easier (and faster) to make in circular. The boxes are cheaper to make in a square. It's basically that simple.

Some pizzas are square, such as the costco take and bake pizzas. However, if you are wanting a quality pizza it will almost always be circular. They are usually pressed after being rolled up in a ball. If you put a ball of dough into a press, it will come out circular. If you want to make it square, then it will take a little more work and likely will not come out as good.

The boxes are easier and cheaper to make square. That's why they are square. You could make a circular box, but if the pizzas are only selling for $25 (at the most), then the extra costs involved in having a circular box is not worth it..

Apparently it's easier to make and store square boxes, and easier to render round pizzas (especially if you're in a classic pizzeria where they hand toss the crust). Some pizza joints have square pizzas in square boxes, which are often cut into checkerboard patterns.

Same goes for round cakes appearing in square boxes....

Ever try to get a round pizza out of a round box? That could get interesting.

Also it's cheaper to make and easier to store square boxes.

Good question, I guess is it's cheaper, because making a round box would cost more and also would have to be specially ordered, I think it's the profit margin, with pizza industries, to go with the cheapest.

Once you eat the best part of the pizza, you need a place to store the crusts until you dip them in the sauce.

Those corners give you just enough room for storing the crusts...

because its easier to cut cardboard into squares than into circles. also some pizzas are bigger than others and its more efficient to make a one-size-fits-all box instead of different size circles.
