The most famous online school is University of Phoenix. There was a great article about them in last Sunday's NY Times (Feb 11,2007) - it isn't about Penn Foster but it does say a lot about how online schools work and how well they are respected.
Check it out.

I am also attending school at Penn Foster. To me, it is well worth it. I am a stay at home mom so the convenience of distance learning is to my advantage. Plus, it is so affordable. To get my Associate's for only $900 a semester, including books, for a low, no interest monthly payment, was something I couldn't pass! I am a little nervous about what will happen once I complete if I am interested in continuing my education and getting my Bachelor's. But according to last month's newsletter, they will be announcing colleges in which they are forming a partnership that will accept our credits. I know University of Phoenix is the most reputable and most likely to be accepted at major universities for transfer, but have you seen their cost? Outrageous! You have to determine what your long term goals are. If you already know what college you plan on attending next, you need to talk to them and see if they will take your credits. Good luck!

i'd say that it is authorized, through no longer through a regarded association...those colleges u ought to stay faraway from as u basically isn't earning a level yet a certificate. dissimilar employers will frown on an practise gained from a school like this, it isnt very credible...
