Buy Spyders {SPY} they are like buying small bundles of stocks that follow the S&P.. They are as safe as you will get in the stock market. Watch the market and buy on the dips (days that the S&P dropps).and sell on days it is up..(like today)..use a simulated low cost trade company like Scott trade..You have to add trade costs to your transactions..Scott only charges $7 per trade, and move all of your money at the same time or trade charges will eat up your profits. If you had bought them yesterday and sold them today .. you would be richer today.

Get the newspaper page that lists the stocks and throw a dart at it to determine which stock to buy.
And keep doing that till your money is invested.

Don't know much about stock. I just know. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, and try buying some blue chips. Hope you do well.
