It is a folklore. It was a pure coincidence that some person happened to see a ground hog see it's shadow and then 6 weeks of winter occured afterwards

It is folklore . . . just people who were trying to make rhyme or reason out of a big, confusing world. There is a big, fat groundhog who has a burrow under one of my sheds--but I still watch the weather forecast on TV.
