He is always so rude to everyone, everything he does breaks every moral and ethical value in medicine, and he is probably the greatest liability a hospital could ever face. How does he have a job there? Why doesnt he wear scrubs? Does he have a patient load or does he just walk around screwing up every one else's cases?
I am losing my mind with this. (haha)
Thanks in advance

I dont watch the show either but it is on now. My RN wife always exclaims " I am so freakin sure" everytime a commercial is on highlighting his mastery of medicine.

He is rude and unethical, but he is the most brilliant doctor on the staff, and (almost) all of his actions are to help people. If you think about it, he usually teaches either patients or co-workers valuable life lessons.

They made his character that way because it is hugely appealing for an audience. He is a true tragic hero. While he probably wouldn't fit in at a real-life hospital, he is still one of my favorite characters on TV based on his sense of humor and his general outlook on life. I can sympathize with his feelings and actions, and he says the things that I could never say myself.

Not only that, but he makes the show watchable. Without a character like him, the show would be too intellectual and pretentious for me to follow, since I have no knowledge of medicine or Hospital life. I just like watching his interactions.

I don't think he wears scrubs because he is a diagnostic specialist, rather than a functioning doctor. He is rarely called on to stop bleeding or whatnot.

He faces no lawsuits for his actions because his patients usually get well. Patients can't sue for rudeness, either- only complain. The hospital is unwilling to fire him because of his brilliance.

Why is that House MD guy such a jerk?

He was abused as a child. He became a drug addict. He was misdiagnosed in the hospital. It cost him his hip and left him in terrible chronic pain. He is losing his liver and kidneys and the toxins in his blood alone should be making him irritable as hell.

He is always so rude to everyone, everything he does breaks every moral and ethical value in medicine, and he is probably the greatest liability a hospital could ever face. How does he have a job there?

For one thing, this is the hospital that misdiagnosed him and cost him his hip and his Boss was the doctor in charge when it happened. For another thing it is a teaching hospital and he has tenure.

Why doesnt he wear scrubs?

He doesn't wear scrubs because he is not a surgeon nor is he in the ER, he does not like patients to think he is a doctor because then they will want free medical advice, and the white Jacket would have his name on it andthat would be even worse as he might have to talk to his own patients and their evil relatives. Time is of the essence and he has no time to waste talking to idiots.

Does he have a patient load or does he just walk around screwing up every one else's cases?

He handles the trouble cases that seem to have no easy solution and he helps out in the clinic as well as subbing in as a teacher from time to time but that has only been shown once on the show.

I am losing my mind with this.

Sorry to hear that, Now turn your head and cough. Just Kidding.

Or am I?

Tell your wife to compare him to a heart surgeon and they way they behave. They are in and out in minutes. they seldom see their patients. If they do it is earlier in the AM when no one is around. They normally send their assistants to check up on things. And if tyou really want them you better have a lot of time on your hand to try and page them.

In general, doctors see patients for a few minutes, go to a desk write out some orders and disappear leaving nurses to actually tend to patients. If the patient wants anything not on those orders the nurse has to page the doctor and hours later the patient might get the thing they wanted but by then it is way too late.

House is not that far from the cruddy behavior that actually exists in the medical community but practitioners of medicine are unlikely to admit it because they want to keep their jobs.

The nurses montra at one clinic was "See no Evil; Hear no Evil; Speak no Evil; I just work here." the last one is the monkey who just holds up his hands as if to say he can't do anything for you.

Sorry to hear you don't like the show but it is funny.

Tonya L hit the nail on the head....and how can you criticize the character without having watched the show enough to learn his back story.
If you would watch the show, you would start to understand why he is the way he is. You would also see that, yes he does have a patient load in that all the doctors are required to put in X amount of hours in the clinic taking patients there. And he doesn't go in screwing up anyone else case...those cases are his to begin with. He runs that department and those patients are all referrals in essence.
And as far as wearing scrubs.....I've never ever ever seen my doctor in scrubs. She's always worn street clothes....she doesn't even wear a white lab coat.

The reason he's a jerk is mainly because he's in constant pain with his leg. But he saves a lot of lives by stepping out on a limb (no pun intended there) and trying treatments that no one else considers. Recently, there was a cop that had been treated by House that tried to have him locked up due to the way he was treated (that and his painkiller addiction). He does wear scrubs if/when he's in an operating room. House and his team get the complicated cases, so yes, he has a patient load.

Well, I've never missed an episode.

He does break rules on a daily basis yes, but they are ALWAYS for th benefit of the patient.

As for him being a jerk, part of it is the amount of pain he is in from his leg, but it's also his defense mechanism for not letting anyone get too close to him.

Oh, and we also found out a couple episodes ago that he was physically and mentally abused as a child by his military father, which may also be contributing factor.

Because no one would watch it if he were a "nice guy." That's what makes his show different from all the other medical shows that are on tv.

Besides, it's like a car accident/train wreck. Can't stop watching it even though I know it's bad.

He's just a character in a show and he's playing the character that is given him. Somehow that role causes people to want to watch what kind of crazy thing he's going to do next. This causeses the ratings be high - watch for more shows with characters like this. It's part of the demise of our culture.

well, if he were a walk in the park the show prolly wouldn't be as popular. all of his antics & questionable practices keep viewers on the edge of their seats. his character is unique, so to speak. he's not a "mc dreamy", he's a tragic character who is misunderstood. if he weren't always hopped up on pain medication & his wife/fiancee' hadn't left him it would be just another doctor show.
