It's very very easy...all you do is unscrew it from the bottom of your laptop then just move the clips away from the memory and snap the memory out.
This is a good guide:

Just be aware that your laptop can only take so much memory. So if it says you can handle 1 Gb, then you either have to just add 512 memory module to the empty slot next to it. Now if it says it can handle 2GB, then buy the 1 Gb module if you can afford it. Reason is if you buy 512 and then later decide to upgrade to 1 Gb you lose the money on the 512 memory module. So better to buy 1 Gb then replace the other 512 Mb with a 1 Gb when you can afford it.
But this is if the Max memory is 2 GB.
Like someone said, go to crucial.com and they can get you straight on what you need.
Also, study the two below sites on the memory modules, but cnet gots the better site cuz they have the video. But both are good.

If you go to Gateway website and click on support, they have at the bottom of that page a link "upgrade your memory now". Enter the serial number of your machine in there and they will tell you what type of memory you need. Note the price and type down on paper and then go shopping around to find the best price. Start with newegg.com, they have all types of memory and they are really reliable.
Make sure you have enough space to add memory. Often laptops have only 2 slots and if you have already used them up (2 sticks of 256) then you will need to remove them and replace them with 1 stick of 1GB. Or remove one and replace it with a 512MB for a total of 768MB.
On Gateway.com you can also look for the documentation on your laptop, where you will find a step by step guide on how to upgrade it with your new memory. Take a look at it and if it doesn't scare you, then you'll know you are up to it.
If you decide to go for it, make sure you remove the battery from your laptop and power adaptor cable. Don't forget to ground yourself before touching the inside of the laptop and the new memory stick.

Yes you should have a laptop RAM. It is smaller size compared to desktop RAM modules. Further, before upgrading verify that your laptop has free slots to support additional RAM modules. Otherwise you have to replace your existing stick with a new one.

You need SODIMM ram, which is physically smaller. Other then that it is very easy, just like a regular computer. Take off the plate (On the bottom), find the ramslot, and snap it in. Ta da.

this can no longer be too massive of an deploy. first ingredient i might want to reccommend you do is examine the documentation for the workstation, only to be particular it may cope with that a lot reminiscence. also, in the owner's guide, it might want to instruct the position the reminiscence sticks pass. many times there are a pair of panels on the bottom of the workstation. The reminiscence sticks will pass in a unmarried of those cubicles, and it might want to tell which one both on the casing itself, or in the owner's guide or on-line documentation. you'll want a phillips screwdriver with an particularly small head, like those that are available in eyeglass fix kits, to open the compartment. upon getting it open, you'll see your present reminiscence stick(s). get rid of them in case you want to by technique of liberating the levers on both fringe of the stick, then tilting the precise of the stick in the direction of you at a 40 5 degree perspective. Then line up the notches on the hot reminiscence keep on with the socket on an identical perspective the old stick replaced into bumped off in, snap it down into position, and % up the case and commence up your workstation. you may want to opt to pass into the BIOS to configure it, yet maximum platforms will immediately note of the hot reminiscence configuration.

should be fairly easy. try this site... http://www.crucial.com. They can tell you exactly what type of ram you need by remotely checking your machine, and also will have instructions on how to add it. Like, my laptop required me to remove the keyboard to get to the second memory slot when I went from 512MB to 2GB... I had to switch out all of the memory.
