There are 16 teams, 8 per conference, as in the top 8 with points, the top 3 seeds are all division leaders, So if the Sabres got 100 points, Montreal has 98 points, New Jersey has 92 points, and Atlanta had 96 points.. the top 4 seeds would be:
1.) Sabres
2.) Atlanta
3.) New Jersey
4.) Montreal
This is because the division leaders automatically get the first 3 seeds, so as long as you are winning your division, points don't matter, you automatically get the top 3 seeds. This is exactly what's going on now with Dallas, 3rd most points in the NHL behind Nashville and Buffalo, but still in 4th seed if playoffs started today because Nashville is the division leader with 1 more point.

Easy. 16 teams total. The top Eight teams from each Conference. Teams are seeded 1 through 8 based on record during regular season. The top four teams have home ice in the first round. 1 plays 8; 2 plays 7; 3 plays 6; and 4 plays the 5 seed.

There are 2 conferences: East and West. Each conference has 3 divisions.
8 teams per conference make the playoffs (16 total).
The TOP THREE teams in each division are automatically entered into the playoffs as seeds 1, 2 and 3. (regardless of record, as long as they are the best in their division.)
For example: If the Flyers are the 9th best team in their CONFERENCE, but the BEST team in their DIVISION, they are AUTOMATICALLY the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference.

8 teams from each conference make it. Division winners are the automatic top seeds. The standings are determined by points. A team will receive 2 points for every win and 1 point for every non regulation loss. It is very possible for a team to have more wins than another team but be a lower seed because of the fact they have more regulation losses than OT losses. Ex: The Red Wings could go 50-20-12 (W-L-OTL) and have 112 points while the Sharks could go 53-25-4 and only have 110 points. The red wings would be the higher seed even though they have fewer wins.

8 teams make the playoffs from each conference 16 teams in total. There are 3 divisions in each conference and the top team in each division automatically makes it in whether they finish in 3 or 10, as well they automatically get seeded in the top 3 in the playoff standings meaning they would get a "weaker" opponent in their playoff matchup.
