I don't know. :) But being pregnant just the thought makes me sick. Maybe why other mammals eat the afterbirth afterwards. I believe it is because of the nutrients. Still the thought just is gross to me.

Animals in nature will eat their placentas for a number of reasons. One is to get rid of the evidence of a birth from predators and the placenta is very high in protein which is important to a new mom that may not be able to get out to find food so that she can take care of her new baby(s). Now some counter culture humans will also eat the placenta by making a stew out of it. Personally I think this is gross but then to each his own. If I go to a persons house that has a new baby and they are serving stew, I'll PASS!!!!!! I like the idea of burying the placenta in the yard and planting a tree over it (for those that have their baby's at home).

It is common in other countries and some religions....The father eats the placenta b/c it is believed to bring good luck to the baby, The woman eats it to build her strength after giving birth and is believed to help her recover sooner, and people plant it or fertilize trees or flowers with it. I might do the latter but definitely not the others and probably not the plant thing either LOL.

I know that animals eat the placenta or afterbirth, but I never heard of mothers doing it. Makes me sick!

I did a search and found many sites about this. I copied one of them:
The practice of placentophagia, eating the placenta, is also practiced in some parts of the world. There are even meal like recipes for cooking placentas, including placenta stew, placenta lasagna, power drinks with blended placenta and others. Though some mothers have been reported to eat placenta raw.

There are many reasons listed for eating the placenta, including it helping stem postpartum depression and it supposedly helps to contract the uterus after the birth. We know that many animals eat their own placenta, including as a means to hide the scent from predators.

In Chinese Medicine, the placenta is known as a great life force and is highly respected in terms of its medicinal value.

In a recent interview with GQ magazine Tom Cruise said he plans to eat his baby's placenta.

Yeah, Katie and Tom probably had a great feast of placenta! I wouldn't doubt it; they are weird people.

I think there is several religions that practice this, some are located in tribes in South Africa and maybe the Amazon.

No, folks, its not just scientologists who do this. *sigh*

Its a cultural issue. In MANY world-WIDE cultures, this is a practice. It has nothing to do with a specific religion.

In some cultures, you take the afterbirth/placenta and you burry it under a tree/shrub.

The thought process is (roughly) that the placenta gave 'life' to the baby so it has an 'essence' to it. Some believe it holds part of the child's spirit. Some believe it has 'power.' Some believe its just so full of nutrients, it should be consumed. Some believe that it gave life to the child, so it should continue to give life -- to either people who eat it or to the tree-- it is providing nurishment the same way it provided nurishment to the child.

That's the thought process. The exact reason varries from cultural tradition to tradition.

Consuming a piece of the placenta is an excellent way of stopping a hemorrhage. If only I had known that after my last birth..............

That is what Tom Cruise is. I know the founder is L. Ron Hubbard. But I forgot what the religion is called.
