If you have a BIOS checksum error then Google Emergency boot block restore.
Do you have a bootable floppy?
Are your Operating system boot files corrupted? (re-install operating system)
Can you get into the BIOS setup program? (While booting; press or or or -s to enter BIOS setup.(Your system may be different.) Check settings for installed drives and boot sequence.

My first question (regarding the XP disk) is what order is your system set to boot in? Put the hard disk first and see if it will let you boot without the CD that way.

Also, check Gateway's site to see if there is a newer version of the BIOS than what you have installed. Most of the time that's my easy fix. If that doesn't work, there should be an option in the BIOS to restore default settings.
