I have been an avid Apple notebook for quite a while now. However, I need a new laptop and don't feel like getting r*ped by Mac-costs right now. Any suggestions? My friend had a Sony Vaio notebook which I really liked, but it looks like those are pretty up there in price too. My only request is that it's not HP or Compaq (can't stand those!).

Before you look at brand, figure out what you will be doing with it. Ultra portable, lightweight ? Desktop replacement boat anchor?

Dell make some mighty fine machines, but you might want to check out manufacturers Acer and Asus. They make laptops for others, and have begun to sell designs under their own name.

Well after having several different vendors I have to definitely recommend Gateway laptops, they may not have a lot of the bells and whistles that other makers have like cameras and finger scanners for security but they make up for it in hard drive space, memory, and most importantly PRICE, they are solid systems, the current laptop that I'm using is a Gateway laptop core 2 duo, 160GB hd, 1GB or RAM, great screen for $679 like I said can't go wrong, on the other hand it does not have the best video card but I'm not much of a gamer.

Toshiba laptops tend to have their batteries die within 2 years and the replacements are going to run you at least $200, I've had to many problems with Dell's and hard drives, IBM's are very good and reliable so is Sony but they tend to be on the pricier side. And definitely stay away from HP to many overheating problems and bad support.

I have been a big fan of IBM (or Lenovo, now) laptops. Since becoming a consultant and doing a fair amount of busines travel, I have come to appreciate the small size, rugged hardware, and the fact that it just seems to always work well whether connecting to wireless networks, recognizing peripherals, and just no software imcompatibility issues. Not the cheapest, but you are not paying a premium for "style" or other unwanted gimmicks.

as alan said you should first see what kind of laptop you are looking for. sony's are usually good because their thin and light weight but they are way overpriced. i would go with a toshiba laptop, their screens are great and their price is good, plus you can go to an electronic store and see them before you buy, dell's are good but i would rather see the laptop before i buy it. also one more thing, make sure the processor you get a laptop with either Intel Centrino or AMD Turion DO NOT GET CLERON OR SEMPRON proceesor, they are cheaper but they suck. and if your getting windows vista make sure your laptop have at LEAST 1GB memory.
