The last team that fired a successful coach because he "couldn't win the big one" was Tampa Bay when they fired Tony Dungy. So much for that assumption right?
When you're an organization that fires a coach after he went 14-2 this last season, taken your team to the playoffs twice in his 5 year tenure and in the last 3 of the 5 years had winning seasons....you're a front office full of idiots.
I think what it all comes down to is that the Chargers front office was upset with Marty for telling his coordinators they had the go-ahead in interviewing for other jobs.
So now instead of having a situation where you're looking for two major assistants, you're now looking for a head coach too. And did I mention that all the decent prospects have been snatched up by teams that decided they didn't want their head coaches months ago?

It was good and bad, for the simple fact that marty wasn't calling plays this year, and with the mass exodus that took place in terms of both coordinators and a majority of the staff leaving, keeping him around wouldn't have made sense. But, the best chance for the team to succeed would be with continuity within the coaching staff. Hopefully, they can bring someone in who can run a 3-4 scheme, and let the offense keep lighting up the field.

Depends...If your the GM and you have to find a scapegoat to blame for not getting your team to the Super Bowl, then yes it was the right decision, so you can keep your job. If however, you are basing things on logic and football knowledge, then no it was not the right decision. I honestly think that next year at this time the Chargers will regret getting rid of Marty. He is an excellent coach whose team let him down in the big game.

I believe since the Chargers wanted to make it to the next level aka the Super Bowl, this was the right move to make since Marty Schottenheimer is simply bad luck and can't take a team to the Super Bowl

This could easily wind up being the worst move in the history of NFL management, as Sweetie just pointed out. I have some experience as a fan of a team that was poorly managed for too many years, the Indianapolis Colts.
Mr Irsay let those Tobin fellows tear our team apart in the mid 80's even after seeing what they did to the Chicago Bears. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Ron Meyer and the Eric Dickerson debacle here too. Remember Frank Kush?
Chargers fans are in for a long sad season in 2007.

No. It was the STUPIDEST decision in NFL history! The guy had a 14-2 team in the playoffs! Granted he has a poor playoff record, but with another year to tweak what went wrong this year, plus the core of that team coming back, the Chargers would've been a handful in the AFC next year. They stil may be, but with a new coach almost invariably comes a need to put one's own "stamp" on a team. I say, if it isn't broke, don't fix it! Oh well......

Not at all, there were already a ton of vacancies (Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, TE coach) and adding the head coach is just ridiculous. If they wanted to do this they should have done it sooner and given themselves a chance to hire within (Cameron, Phillips) or at least get a pick from some good coaches. All the vacancies in the NFL are filled...it's just dumb all around.

No. At first I thought "Yes, He can't win in the Playoffs, he's a choker and always will be."
Then I thought, wait didn't someone just win the Super Bowl that we all said the exact same thing about?
He's a good coach, his players let him down, in time he would have won one or at least got to one with San Diego. As a Bronco fan I now feel bad for all Charger fans, and releif for my team as now they don't have to worry about the Chargers (for next season at least).
